New FMCSA Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) Requirements
According to the FMCSA, on February 07, 2022 Entry-Level Driver Requirements (ELDT) begin.
If you are looking to become a truck driver, upgrade your current CDL (or add endorsements), you will need to receive Driver Training Certification before you can take the commercial driver’s license (CDL) skills or knowledge tests as of February 07, 2022.
Who is subject to the new ELDT Requirement?
- Drivers wanting to Obtain a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time;
- Drivers wanting to Upgrade an existing Class B CDL to a Class A CDL; or
- Drivers wanting to Obtain a school bus (S), passenger (P), or hazardous materials (H) endorsement for the first time.
Beginning February 07, 2022, entry-level drivers MUST complete entry-level driver training before being permitted to take certain commercial driver’s license (CDL) skills or knowledge tests.

Who is excluded from the new ELDT requirement?
Any driver who has obtained a CDL before February 07, 2022 and is not upgrading CDL or wanting to add endorsements.
